Did ProtonMail Just Become Crypto Twitters Favorite Email Provider?
Businesses accepting Bitcoin & cryptocurrencies as a form of payment is nothing particularly new. The first documented case of this was the notorious Bitcoin for pizza transaction in 2010. In 2010 a hungry developer named Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 Bitcoins for two large Papa Johns pizzas estimated at $30.
Since 2010 the list of companies accepting Bitcoin has been steadily growing. Some of the best known companies that accept cryptocurrencies as a payment include Microsoft, Expedia, & Wikipedia.
One company managed to surprise & delight cryptocurrency enthusiasts more than the usual & that company was ProtonMail.
ProtonMail Revealed as HODLERs?
A secure & privacy-oriented alternative to Google's Gmail, ProtonMail has been accepting Bitcoin for roughly 3 years. They have already garnered support of many cryptocurrency enthusiasts by placing an emphasis on privacy & accepting Bitcoin as a payment method. Earlier today they have sent out a tweet that sent many wild.
No worries, we will HODL for you (we actually don't sell our BTC and haven't for years).
â ProtonMail (@ProtonMail) November 16, 2019
In one tweet cryptocurrency fans on Twitter went wild sending funny gifs and messages of support. While a look into their BTC donations address shows 216 BTC received & 212 BTC sent. This could indicate that they have been sent to a different wallet owned by ProtonMail or it was a type of marketing stunt.
While it is unclear whether ProtonMail is actually holding its BTC or not, & we have reached out to them, their tweet was a big success. Seeing the massive support that ProtonMail has received, other companies might follow.
