Hammers on the Blockchain?
Westham United to Adopt Cryptocurrency Voting System
Popular U.K. premier league, Westham United surprised many by announcing a new partnership. This partnership is with blockchain based app and token Socios. This partnership will allow Westham fans to vote directly and transparently on club decisions. This will also engage fans with prediction games where players can earn tokens, leaderboards, stores and a peer-to-peer token marketplace.
Westham's digital and commercial director, Virani said the following: "We're a big believer in digital here at West Ham United and in particular utilising the opportunities that digital presents to us to engage with our fans around the world in new and innovative ways. The vision and plan Socios.com have for their platform is extremely impressive and all stems from wanting to create ways for fans to feel closer to their club than ever before - something all football clubs are trying to get better at. We already interact and listen to fans globally through a number of ways online and absolutely see this as another way for us to build further engagement with those communities around the world, whether they are here in east London or somewhere further afield."
Despite the name, Socios bears no relation to well known crypto project EOS. It apparently runs its own blockchain and its coin will only be available on their marketplace.
Westham United are the 3rd well known football club to join the Socios club. Other notable clubs on the Socios include Paris Saint Germain & the Spanish Juventus.
Football & Blockchain
This is not the first time that a Premier League team was looking for a partnership with a cryptocurrency or blockchain company. Liverpool FC has previously sent partnership offers to both Binance and Tron. More teams are likely to follow the trend and announce partnerships with blockchain and crypto companies.
